STREAM NEWS UPDATE

New FMSP guidelines and training materials on floodplain fisheries management now available for free download

Since 1992, DFID’s Fisheries Management Science Programme (FMSP) has produced a series of outputs about the management of floodplain river fish stocks.  The latest 2005 FMSP Project R8486 on floodplain fisheries has promoted uptake of this knowledge especially in DFID focus areas in Bangladesh and India using a range of communication pathways and media.  Electronic versions of the FMSP floodplain fishery management guidelines and new training materials are now available for free download on the FMSP Project R8486 web page (see
www.fmsp.org.uk).  Selected downloads have also been placed in the 'Other Organizations' page of the STREAM virtual library for your convenience.  The materials include PowerPoint slide shows that you may use in their current form or integrate with your own materials for training purposes.  There are also leaflets that summarize the key messages from the projects and sources of further information.  The outputs are grouped into four main themes:

  • Overall management guidelines for floodplain river fisheries - including the 1999 FAO Fisheries Technical Paper 384, and a new 6-page Managers Guide providing a concise summary of the management planning process.
  • Guidelines on the selection and management of harvest reserves (fish sanctuaries), including a presentation designed to accompany a 2-day training workshop for building skills on the selection and management of such reserves.
  • Guidelines on managing sluice gates in flood control drainage and irrigation (FCDI) schemes - aimed at increasing catches inside such modified floodplains with only minimal impacts on farming  livelihoods.
  • FMSP approaches to modeling floodplain fisheries - allowing for the multi-species, multi-gear nature of the fisheries, and the hydrological complexities of floodplain resources.

New Policy Brief, "Aquaculture in Watershed Development"

STREAM as part of its on-going work with the Western Orissa Rural Livelihoods Project has produced a new Policy Brief entitled "Aquaculture in Watershed Development." The brief is about the relevance of including aquaculture in watershed development for food security as well as social and economic opportunity, and is recommended for those who want to understand more about the opportunities aquaculture offers to poor people in watersheds development.

To view the brief please visit the Policy Brief page of the STREAM Virtual Library

One-stop Aqua Shop Promotional Campaign, Ranchi, India

STREAM India recently embarked upon a two month experimental promotional campaign for the One-stop Aqua Shop (OAS) based at the Fish Farmers Development Agency (FFDA), Ranchi, Jharkhand, India. The poster-based campaign aimed to generate greater awareness of the services, materials and government schemes made available at the OAS. In total over 500 posters were produced and displayed in villages throughout the OAS’s catchment area. In response the OAS manager has already reported an increase in OAS visitor activity; following this further campaigns are planned featuring posters outlining aquaculture techniques.

To learn more about the OAS service and STREAM’s activities in India please visit the India page of the STREAM Virtual library.
